Prawat Laucharoen’s story is that of an adventurer, and his pursuit of creating a life led him far from his hometown of Ratchaburi in central Thailand. His education at Silpakorn University in painting was a starting point, where he formulated a vision of himself as a master of printmaking. At the time, the climate afforded a greater priority to painters, and printmaking was an art form not fully recognized. As a young artist he worked in cartography during the Vietnam War, and earned enough to buy a ticket to New York where he won a grant to study at the Pratt Institute, and later worked as a lithographer for Hollander’s Workshop and Chiron Press. He redesigned and renovated an industrial space into a livable loft and a location for his own printmaking shop. He worked on etching projects, reaching the point where he realized his dream and had a master’s comprehension of printmaking techniques. He has exhibited at galleries worldwide, and numerous museums and public galleries have acquired his prints. collaborated with the likes of Alex Katz, Larry Rivers, Philip Pearlstein, Adolf Gottlieb and David Hockney. In more recent years he has returned to an earlier passion – teaching – a motion of return that enriches the lives of his students with his Thai character, his international bravado, and his New York legacy. He has taught at Columbia University, Hunter College and Horace Mann.
