Charlotte Hickey’s I AM DELIBERATE AND AFRAID OF
NOTHING places a declaration front and center. A vivid pair of red
lips studded with rhinestone grills opens across the canvas, framing
the work’s electric pink statement. A spiked pendant and heavy chain
cut through the composition, suspended over a dense field of vintage
collage, city fragments, and graphic detritus.
Constructed with acrylic, vintage paper, sequins, and rhinestones, the
surface oscillates between grit and glamour. The imagery borrows
equally from street signage, pop spectacle, and personal symbolism,
building a visual language that is both confrontational and
self-aware.
At its center, the phrase reads as both manifesto and mantra: a
confident assertion addressed outward, and a quieter act of
self-convincing spoken inward.
